Buddhist Monks and Nuns in the picture

Laos

Although a communist country, most lowlanders are Buddhist. Boys from poor families may be taken into a monastery as novices to be educated and fed. Many will leave at 18, those that stay become monks. Luang Prabang has the biggest concentration of monasteries (wats) and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. All photographs © Neil Harris
